‘Not a Good Fit’

A little while ago I was quite excited to be included in an international group of photographers partaking in a long-term documentary series exploring the issue of an aging population. This project, to run until 2030, would feature photo series and short-form essays about people in the photographers’ local communities to explore the issue globally. I was also energised being able to be a part of this project, particularly given my particular interest in documenting the Latvian diaspora, and felt this could also be a continuation of that work.

However, on the eve of the submission deadline for this particular ‘chapter’ - on someone aged 55 or older and whether they were working or retired - I was informed that my work was deemed to be ‘not a good fit’ for the project.

I was a little confused given that I had not yet submitted my work, so on what basis could I be considered unsuitable? I have no answer.

So, excluded from the project, I present to you my short series chronicling the daily life of Sniedze Diana Plesovs, in her early 70s. Only recently having stopped working she still maintains an active life, both physically and socially. (There was a short essay to accompany the images but I never got to finishing it).

Dismal City

An ongoing side project chronicling not just the worn down and decrepit artifacts of small city living, but also the sad efforts to try and bring it to life.
